Has returned more than $1.5 million since being elected to the U.S. Congress
WASHINGTON, D.C. – On the heels of President Obama’s call for a five year freeze on all non-security, discretionary spending and a focus on fiscal responsibility, Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced that he is returning $49,606 in unused taxpayer money to the U.S. Treasury from his office’s budget. Throughout his career, Congressman Kildee has been a strong proponent of fiscal responsibility. Since first elected to the U.S. Congress in 1977, Congressman Kildee has returned a total of $1,519,142 to the U.S. Treasury – a fact that has earned him a reputation for being one of the most frugal and fiscally responsible members of Congress.
“Like so many families in my district and across the country, we all have been tightening our belts and learning to make do with less. My office is no exception, and I ensure that every dollar my office spends is completely necessary and to the direct benefit of the people of Michigan’s 5th district,” said Congressman Kildee. “I also agree with the President that the federal government must do its part to cut spending and waste. However, investments in areas such as education, innovation and infrastructure must be maintained to ensure America’s future competitiveness and success. This will help improve our country while exercising sound fiscal judgment and responsibility.”
In keeping with Congressman Kildee’s long record of fiscal responsibility, the Congressman also voted earlier this month cut Congressional office budgets by 5 percent, a move that will help rein in spending and save taxpayers an estimated $30 million.
The $49,606 in savings was returned from the operating budget to run Congressman Kildee’s congressional office in Washington, D.C. and his district offices in Bay City, Flint and Saginaw.
