Kildee Helps Secure $3.1 Million for Saginaw to Eliminate Lead Paint Hazards

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced today that Saginaw will receive $3,100,000 in funds to eliminate lead based paint hazards. The funding is expected to produce at least 240 units of lead safe housing within the City of Saginaw. Congressman Kildee wrote to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, which administers the funds, urging them to make the award to Saginaw.

“Lead can have devastating impacts on the development of young children and its continued presence in homes in our communities poses a serious health risk. Lead paint was banned in 1978, but according to the 2000 census, 96.8% of homes in the City of Saginaw were built before 1979, meaning thousands of children in Saginaw could be at risk for exposure.

To help solve this problem, the Saginaw County Department of Public Health has embarked on the ambitious goal of eliminating childhood lead poisoning in the City of Saginaw.  They have teamed up with other government agencies, legislators and other community organizations to help carry out this goal and this funding will be integral to their plan. I applaud them for their work to deal with this extremely important health issue for our children and I am proud to have helped bring this money to support the effort,” said Congressman Kildee.

Saginaw will receive $3 million in Lead Hazard Control funds and $100,000 in additional funds to promote the Healthy Homes Program to eliminate lead paint hazards.
