FLINT, Michigan
— U.S. Rep. Dale Kildee said the addition of a third shift to Flint Assembly is a long-anticipated move on General Motors part.
GM officials said about 750 workers would be added in the third quarter of this year, starting with a recall of laid off workers.
The Democrat from Flint is the co-Chair of the Congressional Automotive Caucus.
“Today’s announcement of a third shift at Flint Truck is fantastic news for the Flint community and our workers. Just a few years ago there was a feeling of uncertainty surrounding the future of the domestic auto industry, but since that time GM has come a long way," he said in a statement.
"GM has increased production and expanded its workforce, paid back all of its government loans and had a better than expected initial public offering. Today’s announcement is part of GM’s growth and return to profitability and productivity."
