Kildee: GOP's Proposed Cuts to Police, Job Training Would Devastate MI's 5th District

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Republican House leadership unveiled a partial list of proposed spending cuts, including a $2 billion cut to job training programs and a $256 million cut in assistance to state and local law enforcement. Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) criticized the proposed cuts, saying they would be shortsighted and could have harmful consequences for families in his district and across the country.

“While I have always been a proponent of fiscal responsibility, I believe we should never sacrifice investments in America’s safety and economic stability.  That is why I am deeply troubled by some of the Republicans’ proposed spending cuts in critical areas such as job training and state and local law enforcement. As families in my district struggle with sky-high unemployment, the last thing they need is drastic cuts to programs that have a proven record of helping workers transition their skills, find new employment and attract and create new economic opportunities.  Cuts to these critical programs could seriously jeopardize the economic recovery of our local communities and I will do everything I can to prevent them.

I will also fight against cuts to state and local law enforcement. Communities in my district are already struggling to maintain their police forces and protect public safety with the limited resources they have. Further cuts would be devastating and could potentially put the safety of our families and communities at risk. We should be working to make our communities safer, not gut funding to those who protect America’s families,” said Congressman Kildee.
